Charlie Sheen is back in the news, the latest that he may be rejoining the cast of Two and a Half Men—meaning the show would go back into production!
It seems only yesterday that I read he was suing his former employers, who in fact fired him from the show as a result of his shenanigans—allegedly.
But hey, that's Hollywood. I know, because I once lived in L.A. and still have family there. “The Industry,” as the entertainment industry is commonly referred to, permeates the city.
I bring up Mr. Sheen because after my article about him, asking if he is, indeed, insurable, I received several e-mails and even a letter with an article about one of Sheen's lawsuits.
While the interest is clearly there from readers, there was some surprise at reading about Sheen in the pages of National Underwriter.
This I found surprising. After all, the insurance industry touches pretty much everything, from micro-insurance in emerging economies, to life insurance, to coverage for huge properties to pet insurance.
Actors, performers and sports heroes as well are no exception. In fact, they are prime for coverage. As public figures they are vulnerable to liability on many fronts. A cold or bout of the flu can mean cancelling a movie or concert worth millions. A pulled muscle can take an athlete out of the game.
Brokers dealing with these situations must have specialized skills. They have to know how the industry works and the nuances of coverage and policy language, not to mention the most complicated aspect—the personalities of the actors, musicians or sports stars.
My point is that whether for environmental risks, public entity risks or workers' comp, insurance is everywhere and in my view, the details can be fascinating.
