Zurich Financial Services Group named a new chief executive officer of Global Corporate after the current CEO of Global, Mario Vitale, moved to Aspen Insurance Holdings Ltd.

Zurich said today it named Thomas Huerlimann, 47, as the new CEO of Global Corporate.

Mr. Huerlimann joined Zurich as global head of group reinsurance in 2003. In 2005, he became chief operating officer for Zurich Global Corporate, and in 2006 was appointed CEO, Global Corporate in Europe, until today's announcement.

The Zurich, Switzerland-based insurer said that in his new role, Mr. Huerlimann will be leading and further developing Zurich's global corporate business, which is serving large and multinational customers. He will report to Mario Greco, CEO of General Insurance, and be located in Zurich.

In a separate statement, Hamilton, Bermuda-based Aspen said Mr. Vitale joined the company as president, U.S. Insurance.

With more than 34 years' experience in the industry, he will be a member of the Aspen group executive committee and will report to John Cavoores, co-CEO of Aspen Insurance. Mr. Vitale's appointment becomes effective March 21 and he will be based in New York.

Prior to joining Zurich in 2006, Mr. Vitale served with the global broker, Willis Group Holdings, for six years and as CEO of Willis North America, for four years. He began his career at the Home Insurance Co.

In a statement, Chris O'Kane, CEO of Aspen, said building a strong insurance franchise in the United States “is a core component of our strategy.” He said the company has made a number of strategic moves and appointments in the past year to begin operations in the United States.

“While I am deeply conscious of the current challenging market environment,” he said, “I believe that Mario and John will enable us to realize our aim of developing a meaningful franchise in the US.”
