Whether you're an actor, an athlete or an editor, it's never easy to follow a legend. And after a 29-year career at NU, I don't think there's any doubt that Sam Friedman, our former editor-in-chief, qualifies as an industry icon.

But three weeks ago, I accepted the challenge to take on the leadership of the magazine, and I wanted to take this chance to introduce myself to our readers.

My professional background is in—and my personal passion is for—business journalism. Regardless of the industry I'm covering—and I've focused on everything from commercial real estate to civil engineering to business travel to the art world—my objective is always to deliver to readers stories that will help them do their jobs better, faster and with greater satisfaction (and I've found it doesn't hurt if an article suggests new ways to make money).

This goal I set for my publications is easy to articulate—but harder to achieve. Success really depends on a deep and ongoing dialogue with you. So first and foremost, as I strive to get as smart as I can as quickly as I can about the universe of property and casualty insurance, I invite (implore?) all of you to say hello—and to give me your frank feedback on the magazine (and its website and our events). If there is information, insight, tools or analysis you need and aren't finding in our (print or electronic) pages, I want to know. My e-mail address is [email protected], and my direct line is 201-526-2329.

But in addition to contacting me directly, I want to remind everyone that you can also contribute your comments to every single one of the articles we run online. And to underscore how much we value that input, we're going to start showcasing some of the best web comments in these pages every week—see page 33 for our debut sample.

And stay tuned, because soon we'll be giving you a platform online where you can network and problem solve with the true industry experts—each other.

I also confess to being a junkie—although my addictions are a little different from those of Charlie Sheen (see page 8). I love graphs, charts, numbers, statistics, and you'll see we've launched a data-dedicated section that will become a regular feature of the magazine (p. 13). And you won't insult me if you call me a policy wonk—legislation and regulatory issues are an obsession, and I'm excited about our new Washington Watch column (page 32), written by our highly experienced D.C. bureau chief, Arthur D. Postal. Popular culture, too, is a particular interest of mine, and I think it will be informative (and fun) to regularly explore those points where insurance intersects with the world of celebrity, sports, the silver screen, Silicon Valley and, of course, Mr. Sheen.

I hope many of you will take me up on the offer to get in touch—to let me know what's on your minds and to let me pick your brains as I learn about the industry. I look forward to getting to know you—and to immersing myself in the journalistically rich waters of property and casualty insurance.
