Among the top 10 "cyber threat trends" for 2011, the increased use of cloud computing has created a "superhighway for cyber crime," according to Narus, a Sunnyvale, Calif-based software company specializing in real-time traffic intelligence. Narus said all countries must share information about cyber crime to help stop it and protect the Internet and the economy.
The company listed these as the 10 problems that will "create more chaos in the years ahead":
|- Increased attacks via USB drives as malware and Trojans spread on them.
- Large-scale, targeted botnet attacks.
- Denial of service attacks, like those that affected San Francisco-based Visa Inc. in the Wikileaks fiasco.
- More attacks through social network sites like Facebook.
- Click jacking and cross-site scripting, in which criminals use fake web pages to trick users into giving away passwords and account numbers.
- Phishing attacks from "trusted" third parties, with fake e-mails coming from banks and other trusted sites.
- Online fraud and money mules, active attempts to enlist people to transfer illegal funds from credit card thieves.
- Increased opportunities for data infection and theft from the growing use of cloud computing.
- Data exfiltration and insider threats from anonymous leaks of private information.
- Attacks on mobile devices and wireless networks, which can be specifically targeted in denial of service attacks. Criminals will also try to exploit mobile banking apps and similar programs.
