Tennessee Gov.-elect Bill Haslam announced Julie McPeak will be the next commissioner of the state's Department of Commerce and Insurance.

Ms. McPeak is an insurance regulatory attorney at the Nashville office of law firm Burr & Forman, LLP, where she has worked since May 2008.

She will replace Commissioner Leslie Newman, who was appointed to the post in 2007 by outgoing Gov. Phil Bredesen.

Ms. McPeak has more than 12 years of legal and administrative experience in state government. She recently served as executive director of the Kentucky Office of Insurance (KOI) and has served as general counsel for both the KOI and the Kentucky Personnel Cabinet.

Gov.-elect Haslam will be inaugurated on Saturday, Jan. 15, according to a spokesperson. The spokesperson said Ms. McPeak should assume her responsibilities at the department the following Monday.
