The National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB) recently released its third quarter questionable claims (QC) referral reason analysis for 2010. The report reviewed six categories of referrals related to property, casualty, workers’ comp, commercial, auto, and miscellaneous.

The NICB received 70,295 QC referrals in all categories through the third quarter of 2010, up 12 percent from the same time period in 2009. The category with the highest increase was casualty referrals, with a 21-percent increase in suspicious claims from 2009 to 2010. Referral reasons within that category ranged from staged accident to exaggerated injury. Excessive treatment topped the list, with 5,177 total referrals from the first to the third quarter of this year.
