Colorado Insurance Commissioner Marcy Morrison is stepping down before Governor-elect John Hickenlooper appoints a new insurance regulatory head.
John J. Postolowski, deputy commissioner of finance and administration at the Division of Insurance, will become interim commissioner until Mr. Hickenlooper makes his permanent selection, according to a statement from the state Department of Regulatory Agencies.
Mr. Hickenlooper takes the place of Gov. Bill Ritter, who did not seek a second term. Both are Democrats. Industry experts have said that in most cases new commissioners are appointed even if the open governors' offices remain in the hands of the same political party.
Gov. Ritter named Ms. Morrison commissioner in 2007. Previously, Ms. Morrison was a state representative, mayor of Manitou Springs, county commissioner and a school board member.
Ms. Morrison "worked to balance the needs of consumers with the needs of the insurance industry," said Gov. Ritter in a statement. "She served with distinction, and her positive imprint will be felt for years to come."
