The Ohio Insurance Institute (OII) said insured losses from severe weather in September that included 11 tornadoes come to more than $17 million.
Ohio experienced 11 tornadoes on Sept. 16, including an EF3 (Enhanced Fujita Scale) near Reedsville in Meigs County and EF2s in Athens, Perry and Wayne counties.
Based on information provided to the OII from 27 property and casualty insurers, about 2,935 claims have been filed--2,227 homeowners; 287 business; and 421 automobile.
About $11.4 million of the total loss estimate of $17.2 million would come from homeowners claims, the OII said.
The OII said the insured losses from the storms will likely reach the $20 million estimate released by ISO's Property Claims Services.
The 27 insurers that took part in a survey to come up with the estimate represent about 78 percent of the personal auto and homeowners market and about 30 percent of the commercial lines market.
The OII said claim counts from the companies ranged from zero to more than 500 and losses ranged from zero to nearly $4 million. Damage was caused by wind and hail to roofs, siding, windows and vehicles.
This year in Ohio, an EF4 tornado in June ripped through Wood and Ottawa counties and caused more than $40 million in insured losses. In May, wind and large hailstorms caused at least $31.4 million in losses.
