How did you determine that insurance was a viable career choice?
After college, I didn't want to focus primarily on computer engineering, which was my background. I wanted to be involved in business relationships and the financial industry. Insurance seemed to be a perfect option for my current goals and future interests.

Who do you look toward as a mentor in this industry?
I consider my teammates (four people) to be my mentors. The team has been working together for more than 30 years.

How does the industry you serve (risk engineering) help or hinder your job performance AT your young age?
One of my favorite things about this job is.I don't have a substantial construction background, but I've quickly picked up a few things. My customers have told me during site visits that they are impressed with my knowledge of construction terminology.

How does technology fit into your work strategy?
One of the great things is that I'm able to put my computer engineering background to use in some of the technological projects in risk engineering. In a previous role, I was responsible for data mining from our Risk Engineering Workstation database. I also have been involved in projects that use technology to help estimate losses from natural hazards. The information identified in these projects is starting to be used by risk engineering to help customers reduce their exposures and underwriting.

What's the toughest thing about being a young risk engineer?
The biggest obstacle that I've had being a young risk engineer is that I have less experience and knowledge than peers who have been in this field longer. However, I'm privileged to be able to learn so much from my peers. The age gap certainly hasn't hindered the learning experience.

What's your mantra for success?
I think success comes from keeping an open mind, working hard, and having an exceptional work environment. Of those three, having the exceptional work environment has been the most important. Having an open-door policy, positive reinforcement and environment suited to learning.
