A wildfire earlier this month in Colorado is now said to be the most expensive in the state's history, causing more than $200 million in insured losses.
According to the Rocky Mountain Insurance Information Association (RMIIA), nearly 170 homes were destroyed by the Fourmile Canyon Fire, located in the foothills to the northwest of Boulder, Colo.
Insurance losses of $217 million from the Fourmile Canyon Fire dwarf the previous record of $46.1 million held by the Hayman Fire in 2002.
State Farm has received nearly 200 homeowners claims as a result of the fire, said spokeswoman Tamara Pachl. Of those claims, 40 are classified as having "extensive structure damage," she said. There also have been 21 automobile claims into State Farm, Ms. Pachl added.
Jerry Davies, spokesman for Farmers Insurance, said the company has received 153 property claims and one commercial property claim. Adjusters remain on the scene working inventories, he added.
State Farm and Farmers are the top two insurers of homeowners multiperil in Colorado with market shares of 24.2 percent and 16.2 percent, respectively, according to Highline Data, part of Summit Business Media, which also owns National Underwriter.
Carole Walker, executive director of the RMIIA, said types of homes in the area are wide-ranging, with quite a few homes valued at more than $1 million. The demographics of the affected territory have changed from an area that was once filled with log cabins and secondary homes, she noted.
Claims included those for smoke damage, additional living expenses, and damaged and destroyed homes, Ms. Walker said.
ISO's Property Claims Service estimates that each year on average since 2000, $484 million in insured losses in the U.S. can be attributed to wildfires.
There were 1,190 wildfires in Colorado in 2009, which destroyed 50,500 acres. By comparison, in 2009, there were about 16,615 wildfires in Texas and 9,160 wildfires in California, which is home to eight of the top-10 costliest fires in U.S. history, according to ISO.
