The New York metropolitan area experienced heavy winds Thursday evening that caused "extensive property damage," according to the state Insurance Department (NYSID), and there is speculation a tornado may have touched down.

The National Weather Service in New York said it will survey damage throughout Staten Island, Brooklyn and Queens today to determine whether a tornado or "straight line winds" occurred.

The NYSID said the area experienced wind gusts of up to 100 miles per hour.

An article in The New York Times reports that the weather moved in and out of the area within minutes, leaving damage in its wake that included destroyed roofs, damaged vehicles and uprooted trees.

The NYSID, while urging consumers to contact their agent, broker or company first, has activated its disaster hotline at 1-800-339-1759 to assist with insurance-related questions from the storm.
