This year's top honor of "America's Safest Driving City" is Fort Collins, Colo., according to a report by Allstate.
The sixth annual "Allstate America's Best Drivers Report" found that the average driver in Fort Collins will experience an auto collision every 14.5 years, or about 31 percent less than the national average.
The Allstate report ranks America's 200 largest cities in terms of car collision frequency to identify which cities have the safest drivers, according to Allstate claim data.
Fort Collins city officials credited their residents with earning the safe driving recognition.
Auto crashes in general have declined over the last few years, but crash fatalities still average around an alarming 35,000 every year despite technological advances, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
Mike Roche, senior vice president, Allstate's Claim Organization, noted, "Human error is the biggest cause of accidents. It is vital for us to educate drivers across the country on the importance of being tolerant and attentive behind the wheel."
For the past six years, Allstate actuaries have conducted analyses of company claim data to determine the likelihood drivers in America's 200 largest cities will experience a vehicle collision compared to the national average, the company said.
The top-10 safest driving cities were: Fort Collins, Colo.; Chattanooga, Tenn.; Boise, Idaho; Colorado Springs, Colo.; Knoxville, Tenn.; Eugene, Ore.; Reno, Nev.; Huntsville, Ala.; Lincoln, Neb.; and Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
Safest big cities included: Phoenix, Ariz.; San Diego, Calif.; New York, N.Y.; and Houston, Texas.
According to an Allstate spokesperson, last year's top-three were Sioux Falls, S.D.; Ft. Collins, Colo.; and Chattanooga, Tenn. Phoenix was first on the list of the safest large cities.
