MetLife, Inc., announced that its Troy, N.Y. data center is now carbon neutral based on its 2009 indirect electricity consumption. The facility achieved carbon neutrality by purchasing a diverse mixture of electricity, comprised mainly of hydro, nuclear, and gas. It also purchased wind energy through NativeEnergy, thus reducing its environmental greenhouse gas footprint by over 6.3 million lbs since 2007. The property offset its electricity usage through energy efficient enhancements and virtualization and server consolidation, which compensated for approximately 14 percent, or 4.1 million kilowatt-hour (KWh), of the facility’s total electricity reduction since 2007. The Troy office is the company’s primary data center and houses MetLife information technology operations and systems. “We view climate change as an opportunity to employ environmentally responsible energy solutions that will lessen the company’s impact and protect valuable resources for future generations,” says John Vazquez, vice president, vendor sourcing and corporate services and chief procurement officer. “Having our main data center become carbon neutral is a significant achievement toward MetLife’s long-term sustainability goals.” MetLife purchased renewable energy credits (RECs) to offset the property’s electricity generation through NativeEnergy, a climate solutions consultant and carbon offset provider. The project was verified by energy consultant MCEnergy. MetLife was previously named to the Uptime Institute’s Global Green 100 list for its energy efficiency achievements in the operation of its enterprise IT and data centers. The Uptime Institute is a research think-tank and advisor to owners and operators of the world’s largest enterprise data centers on the technical and business issues of computing reliability, sustainability and energy efficiency.
