International specialty insurer HCC Insurance Holdings Inc. said 2010 second-quarter net income was about $83.4 million, down 9 percent from 2009 second-quarter net income of $91.6 million.

Total expenses rose to $460.4 million from about $448 million a year ago at the second quarter, and income from fees and commissions dropped to about $19.2 million compared to $26.1 million in 2009.

Net earnings for the year thus far are $154.7 million compared to $174.8 million last year.

Total second-quarter revenue fell to $580.2 million compared to last year's tally of $581.1 million.

HCC's combined ratio for the second quarter was 85.6 compared to 83.8 a year ago.

Gross written premium, net written premium and net earned premiums were all up slightly when comparing the 2009 and 2010 second quarters.
