Florida's public insurance carrier says someone fraudulently changed its address through the U.S. Postal Service.

Citizens Property Insurance Corp. is trying to warn roughly 1 million policyholders and new applicants that checks and correspondence from June 14 to June 28 may not have been received. Even worse, it worries the information could be used for identity theft.

It didn't learn about the fraud until early last week, after receiving a change-of-address confirmation from the Postal Service. Mail sent to Citizens' Jacksonville headquarters was wrongly diverted, but the insurer caught the fraud before the a second request to change its P.O. Box was processed.

Citizens has issued a set of FAQs (below) regarding the diversion:

Fraudulent Changes to Citizens Mailing Address Q: I understand some mail addressed to Citizens was forwarded to another address by the US Postal Service. What period of time did this occur and which mailing addresses were affected? A: The US Postal Service has advised that some mail addressed to Citizens may have been fraudulently redirected to an unauthorized location on or about June 24, 2010 through June 29, 2010. The address affected is: 6676 Corporate Center Parkway Jacksonville, FL 32216 Q: How can I find out if my mail to Citizens was received? A: Please contact our Customer Care Center at 888.685.1555 for confirmation. A: Obtain a copy of the front and back of the cancelled check and contact the Customer Care Center at 888.685.1555.
