Public risk managers take note: Liberty Mutual has launched a contest so that cash-strapped cities and towns in America can vie for grants to help fund their local Fourth of July events.
Called "Bring Back the 4th," Liberty Mutual said 10 winners of the Web-based contest will receive a $10,000 grant each to help pay for traditional July 4th festivities that may be on the chopping block as municipalities struggle to cut costs.
Residents from cities and towns across the country, said Liberty Mutual, can help their municipalities by logging onto http://www.BringBackThe4th.com and taking a "brief quiz on Responsible Moments in U.S. History." The quiz will feature questions "about people and events that helped shape our nation."
Liberty Mutual said each completed quiz will count as one credit toward the site visitor's town. The 10 U.S. municipalities with the most quizzes completed on their behalf will win the grants.
Four grants will be awarded to "small" municipalities, three grants to "medium" ones, and three grants to "large" municipalities, Liberty Mutual said.
The contest, already underway, will run until June 14, 2010. Contest rules can be viewed at http://www.BringBackThe4th.com.
