A 5.4 magnitude earthquake struck in central Afghanistan Sunday, the United States Geological Survey reported.

There were reports that at least seven people were killed and 70 others injured.

The quake, 120 miles northwest of the capital of Kabul and measured at 5.4 magnitude, struck about 1 a.m. (4:28 p.m. Sunday East Coast U.S.) and affected three districts in Samangan province, about halfway between Kabul and the northern city of Mazar-i-Sharif.

Assistant Governor Hajji Ghulam Sakhi Baghlani was quoted as saying that the temblor destroyed villages and blocked roads, and it was feared the death toll would go higher.
