On January 12, 2010, a magnitude 7.0 earthquake struck the island of Haiti. The quake has affected almost three million people, and aid is arriving from many countries. Estimates put the economic damage in the low billions of dollars, and fatalities are expected to be in the hundreds of thousands.
On May 12, 2008, a 7.9 magnitude earthquake hit the Sichuan Province in Western China, killing 87,587 people and leaving more than 18,000 missing.
