An imminent exposure that could cost employers penalties of $1,000 per claimant, per day for noncompliance was a hot topic with risk managers at the Risk and Insurance Management Society's recent annual conference in Orlando.

A session on "Key Points: Section 111 of the Medicare, Medicaid and SCHIP Extension Act of 2007″ provided an update on the federal law that soon will make Medicare the secondary payer after liability insurance (including self-insurance), no-fault insurance, and workers' compensation laws or plans for bodily injury claims.

The reporting process that will directly affect these programs was recently pushed back to Dec. 31, but testing is still slated for July 1.
