J. Powell Brown, president of Daytona Beach, Fla.-based insurance broker Brown & Brown Inc., was named to succeed his father, J. Hyatt Brown, as chief executive officer upon his retirement on July 1.
J. Hyatt Brown will continue to serve as chairman of the board, involving himself in acquisitions and recruitment, the company said.
J. Hyatt Brown said in a statement yesterday: "Based on 50 years of experience in the insurance industry, I believe the leadership team responsible for this company's operations is second to none. I am confident that Powell will devote his utmost in time, talent and energy to grow and improve the organization, and I look forward to helping in whatever way I can, especially in the areas of acquisitions and recruitment."
J. Powell Brown was named president in January 2007 when the firm announced its succession plan. He was named a director later that same year. He has worked as one of the company's regional executive vice presidents since 2002.
He was a profit center leader of the company's Orlando, Fla., office from 1998 to 2003 and marketing manager in the headquarters office from 1995 to 1998. Before joining Brown & Brown he was with Continental Insurance Company.
