Celebrating 25 Years of Florida Underwriter

Longtime readers of Florida Underwriter may experience a sense of d?j? vu as they look at this month's cover. Yes, you have seen it before — or at least something very similar. The alligator-and-orange design graced our very first issue in May 1984. The concept was reprised for our 10th anniversary in 1994, and now once again for our 25th. We considered changing the alligator to reflect our industry today, but thought if we “grew” the gator to reflect the industry's current size, it wouldn't fit on the page. We also thought about morphing it into a chameleon, to illustrate how carriers and agents have struggled to adapt to consumers' changing needs. But in the end, we left our alligator pretty much intact from its birth of 25 years ago — although our 2009 incarnation does have a bit more “attitude” than its younger version.

I fondly remember that first cover. I was the public relations manager for Gil Waters and the FCCI Fund at the time and we had an ad in that inaugural issue, thanks to the gentle prodding of salesman extraordinaire David Weidinger. (For a look back at those very early days, see Weidinger's article on page 18.)

This issue has some other familiar names in the bylines. Bill Gunter and Tom Gallagher generously offered memories of their times as Florida's top insurance officials. (There are many “aha, I remember that, too” moments in their pieces. Some happy; others not so much.) Bringing us up-to-date and offering a glimpse into our future is an article by current CFO Alex Sink. Providing additional insight is a Q&A with Insurance Commissioner Kevin McCarty from Contributing Editor Sharon Moorhead.

This retrospective issue also features brief histories of our largest markets — workers' compensation, excess and surplus, and property and casualty — by three experts in those fields. You'll also find our regular compilation of articles about various insurance events and topics. Of particular note is the piece by Contributing Editor Gary Fineout, which brings us insight into all the doings in Tallahassee. Florida's annual legislative session is often compared to a basketball game — nothing really counts until the final buzzer. However, the dealings, discussions, and defeats prior to that final buzzer are equally intriguing, and we bring them all to you in our Tallahassee reports. (Fineout is one of our four contributing editors. This issue features brief biographies of all four reporters, giving them some long-overdue special recognition; their story is on page 24.)

I have been editor of Florida Underwriter for almost one full year now, and I can honestly say it has been even more fun that I anticipated. When I met with CFO Sink in October, we both said how we found insurance “fascinating.” Everyone around the table laughed at that. But frankly, how awful our jobs would be if we thought otherwise!

In closing, my thanks to everyone who contributed to this special issue, and to the many industry friends who have offered articles and interviews over the years. A special thanks to our readers and advertisers for your continued support, and to the staff at Summit Business Media for those magical words, “The issue is to bed.”
