The Florida Surplus Lines Service Office (FSLSO) has upgraded its filing platforms and issued enhanced versions of the Surplus Lines Information Portal (SLIP), as well as the agent and insurer software and FTP submit software.

While the agent submission software release included nominal modifications, the most notable being the transition from the usage of eligible surplus lines insurer Federal Employer Identification Numbers (FEINs) to National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) codes, SLIP received several significant changes. Through SLIP, agents have the ability to submit policy information and view and edit policy data. Additionally, SLIP provides access to a variety of reports.

The new release of SLIP incorporates the combination of the transaction types and coverage code pages into a single page. Additionally, the drop-down box of eligible surplus lines insurers is no longer automatically populated, and users will need to go to the settings section in SLIP to select the appropriate insurers. Like the agent submission software, SLIP also incorporates the transition from FEINs to NAIC codes.

The combination of the transaction types and coverage codes screens was implemented to enhance usability of SLIP and reduce user errors. Likewise, the requirement for agents to pre-select the surplus lines insurers they include when filing policy information was implemented as a means to improve the functionality of SLIP and to reduce data entry errors.

An invoice and payment report has also been added to SLIP's "Reports" section, which provides a listing of invoices sent to an agent from FSLSO and a listing of received payments from the agent. A continuing education report that will provide agents with a listing of all coursework they have completed with FSLSO and the subsequent number of hours earned from classroom and online courses is slated for release during the first quarter of 2009.

Agents and their support staff may continue to use the agent submission software to make their policy filings in 2009. By year's end, FSLSO will provide a new Web-based, batch-filing application to automate that process. FSLSO plans to phase out the agent and insurer submission software in 2010, providing a greater importance on SLIP as FSLSO's premier filing platform.

"We are encouraging our members to become proficient SLIP users, as it will be our main filing tool," stated Assistant Director of Agent Services Carolyn Daniels. "We will be hosting a series of Web-based seminars throughout the year regarding the usage of SLIP and will also be incorporating SLIP usage into our classroom-taught courses this year."
