The American Association of Insurance Services (AAIS), a national insurance advisory organization, has released its latest Homeowners' Cause of Loss Report. The report indicates the percentage and average severity of losses due to property perils and liability claims incurred by carriers that report homeowners' statistical data to AAIS.

AAIS said that the latest report has been expanded from previous versions in order to provide loss information for each state and the entire country from 2005 through 2007. The data is provided for calendar-accident years.

The data is broken into two categories per peril: percentage of incurred losses including catastrophes and percentage of incurred losses, excluding catastrophes. Fire was reported as the biggest cause of property loss across both categories. When included as an effect of catastrophes, fire made up 33 percent of incurred losses. When catastrophes were excluded, it accounted for more than 42 percent.
