When asked to choose between companionship and the thrill of the open road, many bikers opted for the latter. In fact, virtually all hardcore riders said that they would willingly part with their spouse or a significant other before their beloved motorcycle, according to a consumer study commissioned by Allstate Insurance Company. The online study also revealed that riders across all classifications were twice as likely to give up their TVs before their motorcycles.

Approximately 500 male bikers nationwide completed the survey, and their responses were weighted to represent the total population. Allstate said that it developed the study to stay abreast of the changing demographics and interests of motorcycle riders.

The survey prompted participants to select a biker classification, such as a “sports-bike enthusiast,” “stressed-out executive,” “hardcore biker,” or “weekend warrior.” The latter led the field with a 31 percent response rate. The majority of the respondents who were unable to readily identify with these categories were self-labeled “Baby Boomer” riders.

Somewhat predictably, Harley Davidson still holds allure and was cited as the make preferred most by bikers. In fact, 35 percent of participants own at least one Harley and spend an average of $20,600 for the bike. Honda emerged as the runner-up, with 30 percent of participants owning at least one.

The study also revealed that seven in 10 bikers ride at least once a week, including almost 45 percent of the participants who ride several times a week. Aside from the feelings of fun, freedom, and camaraderie with other riders, 63 percent of the motorcyclists cited fuel economy as being the number one reason for riding.

On a related note, Allstate now offers a web site, www.allstategarage.com. The site features what the insurer refers to as “Plan a Ride,” which uses current satellite imaging and mapping software from Google. The site also features “Garage TV,” a tool that incorporates professional mechanics giving tutorials on many different safety concerns for riders.
