FEMA and President Bush have been responding to the disaster caused by TS Fay as insurers begin to release their claim figures from the record setting tropical storm.
FEMA is reporting that federal disaster aid has been made available for Florida to supplement state and local recovery efforts in the area struck by Tropical Storm Fay beginning on August 18, 2008, and continuing.
Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Administrator David Paulison said federal funding is available to state and eligible local governments and certain private nonprofit organizations on a cost-sharing basis for emergency work and the repair or replacement of facilities damaged by Tropical Storm Fay in the counties of Brevard, Monroe, Okeechobee, and St. Lucie. Federal funding is also available on a cost-sharing basis for hazard mitigation measures statewide.
According to the Associated Press, Fay had a record four landfalls in Florida last week, and thousands of homes and businesses were inundated with flood waters this week as the storm worked its way north from the Florida Keys and zigzagged across the peninsula. At least 12 deaths in the U.S. have been blamed on the storm.
