Zahir Sherazee is in a precarious position after a four-month investigation revealed that the former Delaware-based chiropractor fraudulently billed insurance companies for services that were never rendered. Last January, the Ohio Department of Insurance, the Delaware County sheriff's office, the Delaware County Drug Task Force and the Ohio Chiropractic Board jointly began a four-month investigation of the practitioner, whose license had been revoked in 2005. During the course of the query, the authorities executed a search warrant, seizing steroids from Sherazee's home and uncovering documents pertaining to improper billing activities. It was discovered that, from 2005 to 2007, the former chiropractor submitted claims totaling more than $600,000 to insurance companies for services he never provided.
Under a recent plea negotiation, Sherazee pled guilty to a litany of charges, including: insurance fraud; engaging in a pattern of corrupt activity; unlicensed practice of chiropractic services; and possession of drugs. He agreed to pay $250,000 in restitution to the three insurance companies he defrauded. Additionally, the Delaware County Court of Common Pleas ordered Sherazee to serve five years and two months in prison and pay $20,000 in fines.
