A New Hampshire man was convicted of making an insurance claim that predated his policy after he drove his pickup truck into an outdoor air conditioning unit.

Travis Powell purchased an automobile insurance policy with Progressive Northern Insurance Company on March 29, 2006. Just days later, he made a claim to Progressive for payment for damage to an air conditioning unit. At the time, Powell stated that he damaged the air conditioning unit when he crashed into it with his truck on April 3rd or April 4th.

However, Progressive was alerted by the suspicious timing of Powell's claim and launched an investigation. Ralph Gault, a claim investigator for Progressive, headed up the company's initial investigation, which was then turned over to the New Hampshire Insurance Department Fraud Unit for criminal investigation.
