Lack of sleep and experience on the roadways can be a deadly combination, but GEICO along with the National Sleep Foundation agree that sleepy teens are at a higher risk for auto accidents.
GEICO reports that car crashes are the leading cause of death for teenagers and they are at an even higher risk during their first six months of driving. According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, teenage drivers have the highest accident involvement rates per miles traveled for every crash type.
On top of the regular pressures for grades, sports and extracurricular activities, and relationship issues that can lead to inadequate sleep, teens also face distractions while behind the wheel that lead to crashes and injuries. GEICO highlights a few:
Not wearing safety belts
Too many passengers
Night driving
Drowsy driving
Text messaging
Speeding
Driving errors from inexperience
Alcohol use
GEICO also recommends enforcing a parent-teen driving contract to accompany a healthy sleep schedule for the first six months of driving, which is available at www.geico.com .
