Owners of valuable canines whose loving attention to their pets was on display at this month's Westminster Dog Show in New York more often than not have no insurance protection against loss of the prized animals, according to a leading underwriter in this niche.

Rick J. Lindsey, president and chief executive officer of Prime Insurance Syndicate–which offers coverage for high-priced show dogs, search and rescue, and police dogs–said even though the value of show dogs can run into the tens of thousands of dollars, his firm does not write that much coverage.

And this despite the fact that "these people obviously, in a lot of cases, do need accidental death, disease and probably transportation coverage, and in some cases theft coverage," he said.
