A Rochester, New York man falsely reported his car stolen before reporting to federal prison to serve a sentence for a previous firearms conviction. Khaleef Ahmad Reed intended to collect a $9,300 insurance settlement to pay off his car loan.

According to the New York State Insurance Department, Reed hid the car inside a relative's garage before telling police that it had been stolen while parked on the street. Reed then filed an insurance claim and gave the only key to the car to his insurance company.

Insurance Frauds Bureau investigator Gary Sullivan reported that the scheme came to light when the relative purchased a new car and wanted to use the garage. Unaware of the stolen car report, the relative had police remove Reed's car, after Reed's girlfriend refused. The car was then linked to the stolen car report.

Reed faces two-to-four years in state prison after pleading guilty to grand larceny and is being held without bail. Reed's girlfriend pleaded guilty to misdemeanor petty larceny in August and is awaiting sentencing.
