The Reinsurance Association of America's (RAA) annual Catastrophe Modeling Conference next year will look at topics ranging from industry techniques to legislation, the association said.

RAA said the Feb. 19-22, 2008 event at the Grand Hyatt Tampa Bay Hotel in Tampa, Fla., will explore a variety of issues with topics including:

o A California seismic update and its impact on cat models.

o Modeling earthquake risks.

o A review of the 2007 tropical cyclone season.

o The future of catastrophe modeling from the perspective of leading modeling companies.

o Long-term vs. short-term predictions.

o How new rating agency requirements impact insurers and reinsurers.

o The implications of climate change.

o The cat bond market.

o Legislative perspectives.

A general session, "California Seismic Catalogue Update--Will it affect the Cat Models?" is scheduled to hear a representative from the Earthquake Hazards Program-Northern California.

U.S. Geological Survey, said RAA, will provide updates to the latest data entered into the catalog and discuss whether the new information is likely to affect cat models, according to the RAA Web site.

Also on the agenda is a panel discussion titled "Do We Model Earthquake Risk Properly?" RAA said that scientist panelists will examine the issues surrounding the modeling of earthquake risks and where they think the next big earthquake might occur.
