An attorney representing hundreds of homeowners in Louisiana's Cameron Parish said she is nearing a settlement with the state insurer of last resort over hurricane claims.

Jennifer Jones, who represents 165 homeowners covered by Louisiana Citizens Property Insurance Corp., said she had reached an agreement in principal with the insurer for payments on homes that were torn from their concrete slab foundations.

Cameron is located beside the Gulf of Mexico on the border with Texas.

Ms. Jones, who is also negotiating with State Farm over 135 claims by Cameron Parish residents, said “We have agreed in principle with Louisiana Citizens on all the slab cases.”

She said the insurer had not put an exact number on the amount to be offered each policyholder, but she hopes to hear from them next week.

Ms. Jones has rejected two offers from State Farm, “but we are talking” she said and the company's representatives “are coming down the first week of March to meet with me face to face.”

In addition to her private practice, Ms. Jones serves as an assistant district attorney in Cameron Parish, which is permitted under the Louisiana legal framework.
