The Casualty Actuarial Society's annual Ratemaking Seminar next month will include an examination of the underwriting cycle and its impact on the work of actuaries, CAS announced.

Its meeting, March 8-9 at the Hyatt Regency in Atlanta, provides a forum for the presentation and discussion of ratemaking methods, concepts and issues, the group said.

CAS added that sessions are available for insurance professionals with ratemaking knowledge levels that vary from limited to advanced, and the seminar provides an opportunity for actuaries, underwriters and other insurance professionals to further their continuing education.

The seminar is scheduled to begin with a keynote address by Mark D. Lyons, president and chief operating officer of the Arch Insurance Group. Mr. Lyons will share his view of the underwriting cycle, actuaries' past–and possible future–roles in managing this cycle, and the prospect of actuarial training as a background for other senior roles in the industry.

CAS said more than 50 different sessions will be offered covering data management and technology, workers' compensation, personal and commercial lines, predictive modeling, regulatory issues, reinsurance, and risk and capital management.

A concluding general session will examine the role that the actuarial profession in the United Kingdom plays in the area of insurance ratemaking, and the parallels with issues faced by U.S. actuaries, said CAS.

The seminar costs $700 for CAS members, subscribers and candidates; $800 for nonmembers; and $350 for government employees, if received before tomorrow. All costs will increase $50 after this date.

Registration information is online at www.casact.org.
