State Farm said today its losses from the ice storm that has blanketed the United States could reach $26 million nationwide, as other insures are continuing to see claims pour in.

A spokesman for the Bloomington, Ill.-based insurer said in a very preliminary estimate, that losses from its catastrophe unit are projected to be about $26 million, but are still subject to change as claims arrive.

So far, the company has received approximately 8,400 claims from four states, all property claims. California has seen 1,200 claims, Missouri 3,000, Oklahoma 3,500 and Arizona 700.

The spokesman stressed the figures are very preliminary and do not include any auto claims figures.

The damage so far has been as diverse as home damage from frozen pipes, wind and hale damage, and some fire damage.

A spokeswoman for Columbus, Ohio-based Nationwide said the company at this time only has reports from Missouri where it has received more than 560 homeowner property claims and 15 commercial claims.

While not releasing any claims figures, an Allstate spokesman said that it has received most of its claims from Missouri where its national claims assistance team is working to handle activity.

All three companies stressed that their reports are very preliminary and subject to change as more reports come in.

The Insurance Services Office said it is monitoring claims but has not declared a catastrophe. Gary Kerney, an assistant vice president with Property Claims Services, a subsidiary of Jersey City, N.J.-based ISO said it would be another seven to 10 days before a determination is made.
