American International Group Inc. said it has created the position of AIG chief diversity officer and named Terri D. Austin, an attorney with its brokerage group, to the post.

The company said Ms. Austin will be based in its New York headquarters and will report to Steven J. Bensinger, AIG executive vice president and chief financial officer.

According to AIG, Ms. Austin in her new post will provide executive oversight and leadership for AIG's diversity efforts worldwide and be responsible for expanding and implementing AIG's diversity initiatives in the workforce, as well as those relating to AIG products, suppliers, vendors and its customer base.

AIG President and Chief Executive Officer Martin J. Sullivan said the insurer is committed “to the highest standards of inclusiveness to create a multicultural and diverse organization. We are indeed fortunate to have as AIG's first chief diversity officer an individual with Terri Austin's experience and demonstrated abilities.”

Ms. Austin joined AIG in 1990 as an assistant general counsel for the Corporate Law Department where she handled a variety of litigation matters including employment and reinsurance.

From 1995 to 2004, she served as senior vice president and general counsel of AIG Domestic Claims. Most recently, Ms. Austin served as the chief compliance officer for AIG's domestic brokerage group with oversight for compliance with federal, state and local laws.

Prior to joining AIG, she held positions as a litigation associate at a law firm in New York and as assistant counsel with the New York City Law Department.

Ms. Austin received her Juris Doctor degree and a master's in journalism from Columbia University. She earned her bachelor's degree with honors in political science from Grinnell College in Iowa.
