Louis W. Pietroluongo, a career civil servant, was named New York's acting insurance superintendent pending the arrival of Gov. Eliot Spitzer's permanent nominee for the office, Eric Dinallo.

Mr. Dinallo will join the department in a few weeks as a deputy superintendent and will take over as acting superintendent until his confirmation by the legislature, a department spokesman said.

Mr. Pietroluongo, according to the New York Insurance Department's Web site, was named first deputy superintendent in 2002, and has worked at the department since 1998.
