According to an article appearing on fdlreporter.com, a web site for the Fond du Lac Reporter newspaper in Wis., a woman recently pleaded no contest to cashing a check intended for a Hurricane Katrina victim.

In the article, reporter Amie Jo Shaenzer wrote that Ronnette T. Hayes had her friend Bryan Whitmore redirect an Allstate insurance check originally intended for victim La Nece Hayes. The claim-settlement money was meant to supply repairs to Hayes’ damaged house after Hurricane Katrina struck the Gulf Coast. Whitmore allegedly made a forwarding request to the Federal Emergency Management Agency to have the check sent to Ronnette Hayes, who accompanied Whitmore when he deposited the check. For his troubles, Whitmore was given $100 and the rest was kept by Hayes, according to the article.
