New Speaker of the House Marco Rubio (R- Miami) has named nine representatives to serve as Council Chairmen for the upcoming legislative session. Among them are several officials well known in insurance circles:
Chairman of the Jobs and Entrepreneurship Council, Representative Donald D. “Don” Brown (R-DeFuniak Springs) – Brown was first elected to the Florida House of Representatives in 2000. He most recently served as the chair of the State Administration Council. He is an insurance agent with State Farm. Ron Regan (R-Sarasota) and an insurance agent, was named vice chair of the council.
Chairman of the Safety and Security Council, Representative Anna Holliday “Holly” Benson (R-Pensacola) – Benson was first elected to the Florida House of Representatives in 2000. She most recently served as the chair of the Health and Families Council and co-chair of the Select Committee on Medicaid Reform.
Chairman of the Rules and Calendar Council, Representative David Rivera (R-Miami) -Rivera was first elected to the Florida House of Representatives in 2002. Rivera most recently served as chair of the Governmental Operations Committee, vice-chair of the Insurance Committee, and vice-chair of the Education Appropriations Committee.
Speaker Rubio is spending time – and money – on insurance issues. In December, he spent close to $10,500 to hold the first two days of a three-day House “conference on property insurance” at Florida State University's University Center rather than in the state Capitol a few blocks away. The expenses included meals for attendees and the use of several rooms. The resulting bad press may move future meetings to more economical surroundings.
