According to the New York Post, the Department of Homeland Security is investigating an insurance company that was managing congressional money meant to pay claims at the World Trade Center.
The World Trade Center Captive Insurance Company (WTCCIC) will be investigated on charges by Jerrold Nadler (D-N.Y) that the company allegedly used federal funds to dispute more than 6,400 claims, including claims by ailing Sept. 11 responders, according to reporter Susan Edelman.
The newspaper acquired records that show WTCCIC has spent more than $50 million on overhead, consultants, and fees, including $32.9 million on law firms. The insurer was charged with handling the $1 billion Congress designated to pay claims against the city and its contractors from the World Trade Center cleanup.
