Paris-based insurer AXA announced the appointment of three chief executives as it integrates its acquisition of Winterthur Group.

Jean-Raymond Abat, 57, regional group CEO for the AXA Mediterranean Region (Spain, Italy, Portugal, Morocco, Turkey, the Gulf and Lebanon), will become chairman of insurance activities in Spain.

Javier de Agustin, 54, currently CEO of AXA Seguros, will be named CEO of insurance activities in Spain.

AXA said it would operate from two sites, Madrid and Barcelona, as its headquarters for the Spanish markets.

Paul Sampson, 50, currently CEO of AXA Life Insurance, will be appointed CEO for company life insurance activities in Japan.

The appointments are subject to the successful completion of the Winterthur acquisition, which is expected Dec. 31.

AXA announced in mid-June that it would acquire Winterthur from the Zurich-based banking firm Credit Suisse Group in a cash deal for about $10 billion.

In the United States, AXA's business is exclusively life and savings, while Winterthur's business is property-casualty.
