The National Insurance Crime Bureau recently named the top 10 states for motorcycle theft in 2005.
According to the NICB, 70,613 motorcycles were stolen last year, a slight decrease from the 71,108 stolen in 2004. These numbers represent a loss of over $434 million to motorcycle owners and the insurance industry. Additionally, a motorcycle's base price sometimes exceeds $20,000 once details are added, said the organization, yet recovery rates typically fall in the 25- to 30-percent range nationally.
With data such as NICB's mirror image of the Federal Bureau of Investigation National Crime Information Center's stolen ve-hicle file, the study analyzed theft in seven styles of cycles — minibikes, minicycles, mopeds, motorbikes, motorcycles, motor-scooters, and multi-wheels.
