Nearly two months into his new gig as chief executive officer at Lloyd's of London, Richard Ward remains an international man of mystery.

During his first day on the job, April 24, the biggest property-casualty insurance gathering on the planet--the Risk and Insurance Management Society's annual conference--began in faraway Honolulu. At the time, I thought Mr. Ward had missed a tremendous opportunity to introduce himself to leading brokers, insurers, buyers and the press.

Instead, Mr. Ward chose to remain in London and keep a low profile that he has maintained to this day. As an outsider new to the insurance market in general, and Lloyd's unique business style in particular, Mr. Ward has focused on doing his homework and learning the ropes.
