One of the biggest costs incurred by the Schools Insurance Authority, a group of school districts in California, is coverage of school buses, so the organization turned to the Public Entity Risk Institute to determine when most vandalism occurred.

Before joining the Data Exchange–a unit of Fairfax, Va.-based PERI that crunches loss information provided by its members–the SIA assumed the greatest risk period from fire, property damage and vandalism for its buses was during summer vacation.

In the end, however, the data revealed that most damage occurred during the Thanksgiving and Christmas/New Year's school break. In response, SIA heightened security for its buses during the holiday period, substantively reducing damage to its parked buses.
