A persistent gap between the priorities of those in information technology and business-line management at insurance companies remains a "significant obstacle to performance improvement," a leading business consultant contends.

John Hagel III, a former McKinsey & Company principal, also said the gap is a threat to the adoption of new automation options.

"The continuing friction in some ways is totally understandable," said Mr. Hagel, in his keynote address here last week during the opening general session of the ACORD LOMA Insurance Systems Forum.
