Attention insurers! It's time to embrace your role as a technology leader–at least when it comes to service-oriented architecture (SOA).

"[Insurers] are at the cutting edge of where SOA is, more so than other industries that have been very slow to adopt SOA," observes Ronald Schmelzer, senior analyst and founder at ZapThink, an advisory firm focused on SOA.

True, looking out across the landscape there may be few, if any, totally services-based architectures. But in a report just published in March by Forrester Research analysts Marc Cecere and Andrew Bartels, 39 percent of insurers claim to have an enterprise-level strategy and commitment to SOA vs. only 13 percent of respondents in other financial services sectors and 17 percent across all industries.
