In mid-October, NOAA began tracking Tropical Storm Vince, the second to the last name on its list for this year. The 2005 hurricane season was the second busiest on record, with 20 named storms. Vince, the 11th hurricane of the season, is the first storm in the Atlantic Basin to begin with the letter V since storms began acquiring names in 1953.

Although this year experienced the most named storms, the greatest number of storms in a single season was 21 in 1933. The hurricane seasons of 1887 (unnamed storms) and 1995 (Allison to Tanya) each had 19 storms. Hurricane statistics date back to 1851.

Wilma is the final name on the 2005 list, which contains only 21 names. As relatively few names begin with the letters Q, U, X, Y, and Z, those letters have been skipped.
