News sources around the world have picked up the story of the Italian man who chained himself to the gates of a Sicilian law court to protest delays by his insurers. Carmelo Cisabella, 39, has an inoperable spine disease and has been given six months to live, Reuters reported. Recently, Cisabella was told by an Italian court to come back in 14 months to hear the outcome of his demand for insurance damages. He is seeking approximately $596,300 from his insurers to help cover his medical expenses during his final months.

Although his insurers approved his claim, in principle, the Italian system is notoriously sluggish, according to Reuters. In a bid to speed up the process, Cisabella turned to the courts, but was told to return next year to hear their decision.

More than a decade ago, Cisabella was involved in a motorcycle crash that left him paralyzed. Confined to a wheelchair, he subsequently developed a lethal infection of the spine. The insurance claim dates from the time of the accident.
