The motorcycle most likely to be targeted by thieves is Suzuki's GSX-R Series, according to a recent study of claim data on more than two million motorcycles insured over the past three years by the Progressive Group of Insurance Companies. The GSX-R Series also is the motorcycle model most often involved in crashes.

Following the GSX-R as the most coveted bike were four more Japanese models. The Kawasaki Ninja Series, Yamaha YZF Series, and Honda CBR Series appeared on both lists, coming is in as the second, fourth, and fifth most likely to be involved in accidents.

The model least popular among motorcycle thieves is another Suzuki offering, the Savage, which ranked as the third least likely bike to be crashed. Number one on the list of the safest bikes was the Yamaha Virago Series, followed by the Honda Rebel Series at number two. Harley-Davidson's FXR and the BMW R1200C ranked fourth and fifth, respectively.

So what does this mean for bikers? Premiums are based on model claim data, as well as individual driving records. “If you buy a bike that's stolen often, you may pay more for comprehensive coverage, and if you buy a bike that is involved in more crashes, then you may pay more for collision,” said Rick Stern, motorcycle product manager for Progressive. “We want bikers to be aware of what drives rates so they can make better, more informed insurance decisions.”
