Florida Chief Financial Officer Tom Gallagher has announced he will meet with workers and employers to discuss the state's workers' compensation system and recent rate reductions.

The meetings will be held as workshops: Dec. 13 in Ft. Meyers, Dec. 14 in Tampa, and Dec. 15 In Orlando.

"Meaningful reforms, more aggressive investigation of workers' compensation fraud and compliance efforts have led to dramatic savings for Florida's businesses," Mr. Gallagher said. "But we must continue to improve the system for our small businesses and our workers."

He made his comments in support of Florida Insurance Commissioner Kevin McCarty's call for a 13.5 percent decrease in workers' compensation premiums.

Mr. Gallagher noted that this year's decrease in Florida workers' comp premiums will be the third consecutive reduction since the passage of Senate Bill 50A in 2003, which implemented several reforms and increased the penalties for workers' comp fraud and premium evasion.

He said the rate decreases have saved employers a total of almost $1 billion since 2003.

In late October, Mr. Gallagher noted that antifraud efforts have led to double the number of fraud arrests in just one year and the recovery of more than $52 million in evaded premium.
