Chubb Group (personal lines) and Progressive Insurance have again received top marks from New York state insurance agents.

The findings were made in a Company Performance Survey of New York state independent agents sponsored by the Professional Insurance Agents of New York.

The third annual survey, done by Internet and fax, asked independent agents in New York to rate companies on seven areas of interest. Close to 500 agents responded to the survey, evaluating 54 companies or their business units.

The seven areas of interest the survey covered were products and pricing, treatment of agents, marketing support, technology, claims handling, service, and underwriting.

The Glenmont, N.Y.-based regional association's office said Chubb, Progressive and Atlantic Mutual all received high marks in the survey, which asked agents to rate companies on a scale of one to five on individual questions. All three ranked among the top five companies on nine or more of the survey's 16 performance items.

Also scoring well were: Allstate, Andover Companies, Erie Insurance Group, Fireman's Fund (personal), MetLife Auto & Home, New York Central Mutual, Preferred Mutual, Security Mutual and Sterling Insurance Co. These companies all scored among the top carriers on five or more of the survey's performance items, according to their independent agents who participated in the survey.

Here are some highlights of those who scored high in the survey:
